To coincide with the exhibition things we didn’t have before, Pump House Gallery invites artists Craig Fisher, Lauren Godfrey and Greta Hauer to share their thoughts on object ‘thingness’. Using this ambiguous statement as a starting point, the event aims to delve deeper into conversation instigated by the exhibition itself: the point at which an object transcends its inanimate status and is imbued with significance beyond its immediate visual quality or utilitarian function.

This informal event will be mediated by curator Hannah Conroy who has worked with members from CDS Wandsworth, a local recovery group, to select and curate artworks for this exhibition.

Craig Fisher is an artist based in Nottingham. His work has recently been selected for the Jerwood Drawing prize and featured in an exhibition at The Small Collections Room, Nottingham Contemporary. He curates Mrs Rick’s Cupboard, a project that presents exhibitions in the unconventional gallery setting of a walk-in cupboard. His work Homemade Devices 2013 – 2015 is featured in the exhibition.
Lauren Godfrey is an artist based in London. Her work was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2012 and recently featured in a performance programme at Nottingham Contemporary. She is also one half of the collective Vanessa Visual and Virginia Verbal who produced the publication Her Eyes and My Voice: Performing to Objects amongst other issues in the series.

Greta Hauer is an artist based in London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2014 and has since been working on her own practice whilst teaching Contextual and Theoretical Studies at London College of Communication. Her work Daylight Simulator (2014-2015) is featured in the exhibition.

Hannah Conroy is the curator at Folkstone Artworks and has curated all three annual Open exhibitions at Pump House Gallery. Her writing on the Havana Biennale 2015 was recently published in Frieze magazine.
