Harmonious Arrangements by Anna Nightingale

Harmonious Arrangements by Anna Nightingale

Reviewers describe Nightingale’s work as abstract, a categorisation that she considers inappropriate. Although it is non-representational, her paintings are visual expressions
of her sensations and moods such as anger, joy, ecstasy or tranquillity.
Nightingale draws inspiration from two painters who also wrestled with labels. Mark Rothko, who combined colour, structure and space to convey emotions, was slotted
into a new pigeonhole: abstract expressionism. That is the perfect categorization for Nightingale’s current work. Whistler pioneered a style that defied conventional
19th century terminology; he thought that art should be harmonious arrangements of colour, just as music is an arrangement of harmonious sounds.
