To be an artist is not about the pomposity of being able to call yourself “an artist”, its not about the glamour, or the plaudits, and its not supposed to be easy. I am interested in the struggle of being born as such, which is often difficult but it is un-escapable.
Tracy Emin recently said of being an artist “First you have this amazing inspiration and then you need the conviction to do it and persuade others what it is...” this is always a difficult challenge, but I remain interested most of all in the artists who do not feel the need to “pursuade others” but make the work regardless.
Delacroix said “Not only is the greatest by virtue of his talent, audacity and constancy the most persecuted; he is also exhausted and tormented by the burden of his imagination”. It seems clear to me the need for an artist to find some sanctuary from prosaic expectations. In fact Ray Exworth, one of the exhibited artists relayed advice given to him by Jacob Epstein; “....find a space away from things and work hard”
This exhibition of three solo exhibitions is a celebration of three artists who do exactly this and us such find the “anti-mainstream” and the “honest” and demonstrate, for me, effectively Cornwall’s success in providing such refuge.
