Butcher Works Gallery and the Ruskin Arts & Crafts shop
Freeman College, part of the Ruskin Mill Trust, provides experiential
education for young people
marginalised by special learning needs. The Trust discovered that when young people with learning
difficulties, including autistic spectrum
conditions, worked with artists and craftspeople their health and
personal social skills improved
dramatically. The college also
endorses the region’s industrial
heritage, teaching hand-crafts in pewter, iron, copper and silver.
In 2007 Freeman College opened Butcher Works Gallery, situated at the heart of the cultural re-
development of a historic Grade 11 building. In addition to the gallery the redevelopment houses the Academy of Makers studio complex, the award winning organic Fusion Café and a new shop, Ruskin Arts & Crafts.
Butcher Works Gallery promotes high quality specialist hand-craft skills. Traditional practices are supported creatively, exploring new and
innovative designs.
